The Prince’s Teaching Institute
The Prince’s Teaching Institute is an educational charity created by The Prince of Wales in 2006. It supports hardworking teachers by giving them opportunities, away from the classroom, to debate their subjects with leading academics and writers. Through doing so the teachers not only rediscover their love for their chosen subject, which The Prince believes is vital to the development of knowledge and insight in young people, but are also provided with subject-based professional development.
The Institute has a partnership with the University of Cambridge which gives it access to some of the highest profile academics in the country who speak at the events it organises. These consist of Summer Schools, four day residential events which allow teachers to refresh their subject knowledge outside of their school environment, and one-day professional development courses designed by teachers introducing the latest thinking in a specific subject.
The Prince’s Teaching Institute is run by a network of enthusiastic current or recently retired teachers and headteachers supported by a small office team. It has introduced the Schools Programme, a membership scheme for school departments which demonstrate that they challenge and extend all pupils, regardless of background or ability.
